Do I need to be assigned to the issue to work on that? I am going through the good first issues section and most of the issues are already assigned but not closed yet? Can you help me on this?

Thank you for asking this.
In case the issue you’re looking at, is already assigned and if no progress is being made, it’s appropriate to ask the assignee or maintainers whether the issue is being actively worked on. Not receiving a response within a reasonable amount of time, you can ask for re-assignment and then propose a solution by submitting a PR.
If an issue has no assignee, first request for assignment before starting to work on it.
